How Many SMP Sessions Do You Need?
How Many SMP Sessions Do You Need?
If you’re looking into Scalp Micropigmentation, the first question is usually a practical one: how many times do I have to come in? The honest answer is most people need two to three sessions. And there’s a good reason we don’t try to do it all in one.
Why SMP Can’t Be Done in One Session
SMP works by layering thousands of tiny pigment impressions that look like real hair follicles. The first session lays down the foundation — a lighter, wider-spaced map of where everything goes. Trying to pack in full density on day one is how you end up with that harsh, stamped-on look nobody wants.
The layered approach is slower on purpose. It lets your skin settle, lets us see how the pigment healed, and then we build on it. That’s what keeps the final result soft and natural instead of obvious.
What Each Session Looks Like
Session one is the foundation. We design your hairline together, then I place the first layer of follicle impressions, spaced a little wider apart. You’ll see a real difference walking out that day — most people do — but think of it as the rough sketch, not the finished painting. Plan on two to four hours, and some mild redness afterward is normal. A hat is fine right away.
Session two happens about two weeks later. This is where the density gets built — I fill in between the dots from the first session so everything reads as a full, even head of hair. This is usually the session where people look in the mirror and go, “Okay, that’s what I was hoping for.”
Session three is the touch-up, at least a month after session two. By then everything has fully settled, and I can see any spots that lightened up more than the rest. We even those out and lock in the final look. Some people don’t need this one — but most do, and it’s part of the process, not a sign anything went wrong.
What About Healing Between Sessions?
It’s pretty low-drama. No sweating or washing your hair for the first week (dry shampoo is fine, and you can pat your scalp with a damp washcloth). Stay out of direct, full sun while you’re healing. Once you’re healed, everything’s back to normal — swimming, workouts, all of it.
One thing I’ll tell you up front: I don’t use numbing cream. I’ll be straight with you about what to expect at your consultation, and most of my clients are surprised at how manageable it is. I’d rather be honest with you than promise something I don’t do.
How Long Does It Last?
Your results should hold for four to six years before you’d want a touch-up. SMP is low maintenance — no special products, no daily routine. It just looks like you have more hair.
Who Is It For?
Men with receding hairlines or thinning crowns are the classic SMP client, but about half my work is women — thinning around the part line or crown, where the scalp starts showing through. For women I use a softer, more diffused technique so it blends into your existing hair without changing your hairline. No more worrying about your scalp showing in photos or bright light.
Common Questions
Will I see results after the first session? — Yes. It’s lighter than the final result, but you’ll notice the difference immediately.
How long is each session? — Usually two to four hours, depending on how much area we’re treating.
Can I wear a hat after? — Yes — right away if you want to.
Does everyone need three sessions? — No. Two is enough for some people. We decide together after seeing how the second session heals.
How much does it cost? — Pricing is based on the Norwood scale — basically, how much area we’re treating. The more extensive the hair loss, the more sessions and time it takes, and that’s what the price reflects. The best way to get your exact number is a free consultation, where I can see your hair loss pattern and give you a straight answer.
